The contrarian angle: Grayscale’s report may be a self-serving marketing tool. They plan to launch a HYPE trust product—like their Bitcoin Trust—and need to convince accredited investors to buy at current prices. The report creates a narrative floor, but the actual cash flow may never materialize at scale. I’ve seen this before with the NFT metadata standard critique I wrote in 2021: 40% of top collections used centralized servers. Grayscale is centralizing the narrative. Trust is a bug.
Regulatory risk compounds the fragility. Under the Howey test, HYPE likely qualifies as a security—investors provide money to a common enterprise expecting profits from the efforts of others. Grayscale’s own analysis confirms that expectation. If the SEC brings an enforcement action, US-based liquidity dries up, and the PE ratio becomes moot.
